FRONT YARD LANDSCAPE DESIGN & INSTALLATION

This client reached out to us to relandscape the front and side landscaping beds at their Grapevine home. Improving the appearance and functionality went beyond reshaping the beds to include resodding and improving the drainage capacity of the beds.

On the larger right side of the driveway, we reshaped and enlarged the flowerbeds using chop block stone edging. This also increased driveway space, making these practical and aesthetic changes.

We then composted, tilled, and planted beds with shade-tolerant Texas natives and adapted plants. For the narrower left side of the home, we removed old plants, composted and tilled the old bed, and replanted with Texas native and Texas-adapted plants.

Alongside resodding the lawn area, this meant that the lawn both looked better and would be easier to maintain by being acclimated to our local climate.
PROJECT REQUIREMENTS
The homeowner’s HOA specified that the sidewalk edge of the driveway-side planter could not contain rock and had to be planted.
The homeowner wanted to widen their driveway to make it easier for them get in and out of their vehicles.

PROJECT CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
The initial zero lot line and the narrowness of the property and driveway created not just spacing challenges, but erosion challenges with a tree in the front yard. The soil was eroding the left side of the landscaping beds, leaving standing water.

To solve this, we constructed a small raised planter box around the tree using chop block stone. The box was filled with soil and planted with shade-tolerant liriope. Pachysandra plants, chosen for their durability and hardiness, were installed along the sidewalk against the outer bed as required by the HOA. The rest of the driveway ribbon was mulched with decorative stone to further improve drainage.

We also installed stepping stones set in rock beds on either side of the driveway to provide the homeowner with more space to walk. The stepping stones along the driveway had to be custom-cut to fit the strip, then compared and matched to each other. However, the final result was worth it for crafting the landscape and driveway to blend together seamlessly. It makes for a colorful, engaging landscape even in a small space.

Between solving erosion problems and creating more space for the client, our solutions utilized our team's landscaping knowledge to not just craft a more beautiful landscape but a more livable space.
