Lava Sand is a natural soil amendment that is volcanic in origin.  When the lava cooled it formed millions of tiny bubbles or pores that allows it to retain water.  It's different from sedimentary sand because it retains its sharp edges and texture.  Sedimentary sands have more rounded texture and are made up of more solid quartz granules which do not have the same effect.
