Corn Gluten Organic Pre-Emergent Herbicide

Here's an organic way to help reduce weeds in your lawn: Corn Gluten Meal.
 
What is Corn Gluten Meal? Corn Gluten Meal is a by-product of corn processing. It is a completely natural product with 9% nitrogen content that acts as both a natural pre-emergent weed control and a 9-0-0 lawn food. It is currently the only organic pre-emergent option available. 
 
How Does Corn Gluten Meal Work?
It is a fine yellow powder that interferes with the germination of seeds. It works on all types of seeds — and only on seeds. It has no effect on post emergent weeds or perennial weeds  ― it does NOT kill existing weeds, nor does it harm other plants. 
 
When to Apply It
As with other pre-emergent products, its effectiveness depends on timing and application rate. It must be applied as soon as dandelions begin to appear. You may need to apply it more than once per season depending on weather conditions.
 
In North Texas the best times to apply Corn Gluten Meal  are in early Spring between February 15 and March 15) and in the Fall between September 15 through October 15, depending on the weather.
 
How to Apply Corn Gluten Meal
The product is available as a powder (meal) or granule (spreadable). Either product can be distributed using any type of fertilizer spreader. The powder is very fine and somewhat messy to put out, however, it is more effective than the granules when applied at the recommended rate. The spreadable version of the product doesn't cover as well, but it is easier to apply. Both types provide an a natural nitrogen fertilizer.
 
Apply at a rate of 20 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. Water in thoroughly then allow soil to dry out for several days before resuming your normal watering schedule. You'll see better results each year that you use it!
 
You may also apply it in two separate stages of at 10lbs per 1000 sq. ft. at the beginning of the season and again at that same rate 6 to 8 weeks later.​, however we recommend a single, heavier application.
 
One application of Corn Gluten Meal keeps working to suppress seed germination for 4 to 6 weeks depending on the weather. Both forms are excellent sources of nitrogen and can be used as a 9-0-0 lawn food.
 
Give your lawn 2 weeks to use the nitrogen in the corn gluten before applying any other fertilizer.
