Here's a Texas (U.S.) native palm tree that grows more like a shrub and is able to withstand both extreme cold spells and droughts. Called Sabal Minor or Dwarf Palmetto, it typically has no trunk. Instead the fan-shaped leaves emerge from an underground stock, which makes it one of the most cold-tolerant palms in the world, capable of surviving temperatures as low as 0°F to -5°F. This palm rarely grows to more than 5-10ft. tall and about 4ft. wide. The leaves split into blades. White blooms are followed by black fruit.

In North Texas, the Sabal Minor has historically survived extended record-breaking freezes where temperatures remained below freezing for nearly two weeks. It is also remarkably heat and drought tolerant.
