Bee Balm (Monarda) is a purple blooming pollinator plant attracts hummingbirds as well as bees and butterflies. Not only is this North American native perennial pleasantly lemony scented, but it can also be used for medicinal and culinary purposes. It has been known to relieve symptoms of the common cold and is a great addition to tea or citrusy desserts. Give it full sun or part shade and moist, hummus-rich soil.​​​

Here's a Texas native palm tree that grows more like a shrub and is able to withstand both extreme cold spells and droughts. Called Sabal Minor or Dwarf Palmetto, it typically has no trunk. Instead the fan-shaped leaves emerge from an underground stock, which makes it one of the most cold-tolerant palms in the world, capable of surviving temperatures as low as 0°F to -5°F. This palm rarely grows to more than 5-10ft. tall and about 4ft. wide. The leaves split into blades. White blooms are followed by black fruit.

In North Texas, the Sabal Minor has historically survived extended record-breaking freezes where temperatures remained below freezing for nearly two weeks. It is also remarkably heat and drought tolerant.
