The Caesalpinia gillesii, known as the Mexican Bird of Paradise, is a tropical looking erect shrub with fine, soft foliage and yellow flowers with distinctive red stamens. Although it looks similar to its close relative, the Pride of Barbados, it is much more cold hardy (down to ~15°F!).

 

Mexican Bird of Paradise is also highly drought tolerant. Once established, it needs only infrequent deep watering in well-drained soil.

What's killing your plants? It could be a disease called Phytophthora Root Rot.

 

Phytophthora (pronounced “Fi-toff-thor-a”)  is an organism that lives in the soil, and under the right conditions, it can spread through your yard and kill your trees, shrubs, and even perennials.

 

Unfortunately, pruning off the dead branches won't fix the problem. And because Phytophthora isn't actually a fungus, fungicides don't help either.
