FRONT YARD REFRESH WINS YARD OF THE MONTH

Marshall Grain refreshed this Colleyville front yard through two landscaping projects completed about a year apart. The first phase, completed in September 2021, redesigned the planting areas around the street end of the front walkway. The second phase began in September 2022 and extended the improvements to an existing berm on the left side of the yard.
For the first phase, our team removed the Asian Jasmine that had covered the beds near the street, transplanted an existing redbud, and worked compost into the soil. We reshaped the beds with curved chopped-stone edging, then added Brazos River Rock, pea gravel, and mossy boulders for a more finished look.
New plantings were chosen to bring more height, texture, seasonal color, and year-round interest to the entrance while using plants suited to North Texas conditions.
During the second phase, Marshall Grain built up and replanted the existing berm, improved the soil with compost, and transplanted some existing plants. Brown hardwood mulch, Colorado Cobbles, Brazos River Rock, and a mossy boulder completed the bed.
In the Spring of 2026, the Woodbriar Estates Homeowners’ Association recognized the property as Yard of the Month.

The original beds near the street were filled mainly with low-growing Asian Jasmine. Although the groundcover filled the space, it did not create a strong entrance or make the curved walkway a noticeable part of the landscape.

The Landscape Needed More Plant Variety
Our designer chose a better mix of plant heights, shapes, colors, and textures and redesigned the beds with flowing lines that follow the shape of the existing walkway. Chopped-stone edging gave the beds a clear border, while pea gravel, larger river rock, and mossy boulders added contrast and texture.

The Existing Berm Needed a Stronger Presence
The berm on the left side of the property had existing plants, but it needed more structure and a clearer connection to the redesigned entrance.
Marshall Grain built up the bed, amended the soil with compost, and retained established Lamb’s Ear by transplanting it within the new landscape. We added a Blue Diddley Vitex as a focal point, along with flowering Spirea, evergreen Junipers, variegated Yuccas, Blue Sedge, and silver-gray Artemisia. Mulch, cobbles, river rock, and a boulder gave the bed a finished appearance and tied it visually to the first project.

The Two Project Areas Needed to Work Together
Because the work was completed in two separate phases, each area needed its own character while still looking like part of a single front-yard plan.
Marshall Grain repeated several key elements, including Yuccas, blue-gray foliage, Brazos River Rock, and mossy boulders. These shared plants, colors, and materials helped connect the front-walk beds with the berm without making the two areas identical.
