An Ongoing Organic Maintenance Program
Some landscape projects are completed in a few weeks. Others evolve over many years.

This Southlake residence is an example of how Marshall Grain’s ongoing professional care, periodic renovations, and organic soil-building practices can help North Texas landscapes improve over time.
​
Since 2018, Marshall Grain has partnered with the homeowner to restore damaged turf, renovate landscape beds, rebuild hardscape features, solve drainage issues, replace declining plants, and adapt the landscape as it matured. Rather than a single installation project, this property represents more than seven years of thoughtful stewardship and continuous improvement.
​
Today, the landscape features healthy St. Augustine turf, mature shade trees, renovated planting beds, improved drainage, and outdoor living spaces that continue to thrive despite the challenges of North Texas growing conditions.
SERVICE HIGHLIGHTS
2018 – Lawn Restoration & Shade Area Conversion
Our first major project focused on restoring declining turf throughout the property.
​
We removed diseased St. Augustine grass caused by Take All Root Rot (TARR) from multiple areas of the front, side, and back yards and incorporated compost and beneficial microbes into the soil before new Raleigh St. Augustine sod was installed.
​
In a heavily shaded section of the backyard where the turf was that struggling, we converted the lawn into a decorative rock feature using weed barrier fabric, steel edging, and Brazos River rock.
​
Later that year, we treated large areas of landscape beds with corn gluten meal, refreshed with hardwood mulch, and repaired where drought stress had affected portions of the landscape.
2020 – Driveway Lawn Renovation
We renovated a deteriorating lawn section along the driveway with compost-amended soil, new St. Augustine sod, organic fertilizer, root stimulants, and soil-building treatments designed to improve long-term turf performance.​
​
One of the most significant projects involved rebuilding the backyard flagstone walkway and gazebo landing.
​
We removed the existing walkway and reconstructed it on a more stable base. We also made several drainage improvements around the structure, along with some irrigation repairs. We also refreshed the surrounding landscape beds with mulch, seasonal color, and new ornamental plantings.
That same year, we relocated existing landscape bed where appropriate to improve performance and create a more cohesive landscape design.
2023 – Chinch Bug Recovery
When chinch bugs damaged a portion of the backyard lawn, Marshall Grain first treated the effected area with an organic insecticide to stop the infestation, then removed the turf, improved the soil with compost, and installed new Palmetto St. Augustine sod.
To encourage rapid establishment and recovery we also applied organic root stimulants.
2024 – Major Landscape Refresh
In 2024, the homeowner’s neighbors removed some large trees that were creating shade in our customer’s yard, which dramatically changed the sun/shade patterns in the yard. Marshall Grain redesigned both the front and back yards that would work in the sunnier environment.

The result was a refreshed landscape that maintained its mature character while adding new color, texture, and seasonal interest.
2025 – Plant Replacements & Fine Tuning
In 2025 we detected a significant infection of phytophthora ― one of the most destructive plant pathogens in the world. We treated the affected areas by modifying the soil biology. Our quick action allowed us to save many of the homeowner’s trees and shrubs, saving them the cost of replacing the plants and preventing re-infection.
2026 – Plant Replacements & Fine Tuning
Marshall Grain currently continues to visit the property on a monthly schedule to refine the landscape, replace plants as necessary, make seasonal adjustments, and take wildlife protection measures to ensure long-term success.
PROJECT CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
Like many mature North Texas landscapes, this property faced a variety of challenges over time.
​
Several lawn areas experienced disease problems and decline. Mature shade trees created difficult growing conditions for portions of the St. Augustine turf. Landscape beds required periodic renovation as plants matured and conditions changed. Drainage problems developed around outdoor living areas, and a backyard flagstone walkway had begun to deteriorate.
​
In 2023, portions of the lawn also suffered chinch bug damage, requiring additional restoration work.
​
The homeowners wanted to preserve the beauty of their established landscape while continuing to improve its appearance, function, and long-term health.
​
Our Approach
Rather than treating each issue as an isolated problem, Marshall Grain approached the property as a long-term stewardship project.
​
Throughout multiple phases of work, we focused on improving soil health, strengthening root systems, adapting problem areas to changing conditions, and making strategic upgrades that would continue to benefit the property for years to come.
​
We incorporated organic soil-building practices throughout the project history, including compost applications, organic fertilizers, root stimulants, mulch, humates, and other soil amendments designed to support healthier plants and stronger turf.
