Flax Scarlet
Linum grandiflorum rubrum
Annual. Scarlet flax is a show-off in the garden. Each brilliant red flower lasts just a day, but in profusion they set the garden ablaze with intense color. Easy to grow, and low maintenance, plants tolerate hot and dry conditions. Allow plants to reseed, and you’ll be rewarded with months and years of color.
This is an ornamental flax, and not intended for consumption.
Full Sun. Blooms spring to fall. Height: 12" - 18" tall
Days to Emerge: 5 - 12 Days
Seed Depth: 1/8" or scatter on surface
Seed Spacing:
Scatter in a group every 4"
Thinning: When 2" tall, thin to 1 every 4"
When to sow outside: Recommended. 1 to 2 weeks before average last frost. Super easy to grow from seed; simply scatter seeds every 2 to 4 weeks for continual flowering through fall. In mild climates, sow in fall for winter bloom.
When to start inside: 4 to 6 weeks before average last frost; not recommended because can be difficult to transplant. Handle carefully, or sow in pulp pots that can be planted directly into the ground.
